The Nitikman/Chan Educational and Training Fund is intended to support a resident of the Southern Gulf Islands who is working to improve their financial standing in life through continued education. In recognition of the scope of its community involvement, Island Community Services was requested to select and distribute the funds to resident(s) who meet this requirement.
Throughout winter and spring of 2026, Island Community Services explored a number of candidates, until Kathryn Byrne was identified as the standout recipient. Diagnosed with two chronic conditions while working numerous jobs to support her two children as a single mother, Kathryn enrolled in Thompson Rivers University with the ultimate goal of becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor.
“Even though it is a struggle to navigate a full-time course load, work part-time, and be a full-time, single parent with chronic health issues, it is worth it knowing that I am doing everything possible to provide my children with a better life,” she writes, in thanks to the Nitikman/Chan families. “I am so grateful for this grant to help with the costs of pursuing my passion and supporting my future. Thank you!”
Island Community Services is pleased to offer this bursary to Kathryn Byrne on behalf of the Nitikman/Chan families. Congratulations Kathryn, and best of luck in all future endeavors!
