Would you like to make a difference in a senior’s life and gain the skills to help?

Community Connector
The Senior Peer Counselling and care-giver program offers an intensive, lay counselling training designed to build and enhance communication and core counselling skills. The training focuses empathy and presence, woven through learning about the issues and challenges that affect mental health.
We know social isolation is the number one determinant of health as we age. Losses accumulate as we age: loss of important people, loss of mobility, and of independence. All these things can affect a person’s feeling of wellness.
This 60 hour training is one day a week for 8 weeks starting October 18th through to December 6th. Upon successful completion Senior Peer Counsellors are assigned seniors with whom they work one-to-one, often in the seniors’ homes. Senior Peer Counsellors join the team of caring service providers in Island Community Services’ Seniors’ Program.
Applications are now open. Please contact Shellyse Szakacs at sszakacs@ssics.ca or 250-537-997; ext224 for any questions and to set up an interview.
