The FRIENDS program offers Day Programming both individually and in a group setting with activities for adults with support needs.
It assists participants and their support networks in implementing individualized plans to promote socialization, community inclusion, physical and mental well-being, life skills development, recreational activities and more.
The program supports individuals who live independently, with family or with caregivers.
Participants are integrated into community activities (e.g. swimming, library, coffee shops) on Salt Spring Island. Outings are tailored to an individual’s preferences. In house activities include art projects, games, dance, yoga, cooking, social networking and more.
The home base for the program is at The Core Building of Island Community Services on McPhillips Avenue. This space includes multi purpose activity areas, kitchen facilities, a private office, outdoor recreational space, a wheelchair accessible washroom and an elevator. The program runs 9-3 Monday to Friday.
This is one of the longest standing programs that Island Community Services delivers and has been running since the 1970’s.
Although the program is free of charge, there are some fees associated with specific activities such as swimming, attending Dance or Music Program with professional facilitators and taking part in a lunch program. If cost is a barrier, a sliding scale can be discussed with the Program Coordinator.
