11 Acres of Potential

Island Community Services has completed the purchase of a centrally located, 11 acre property on Salt Spring. Situated within walking distance of Ganges amenities and with lengthy frontage on Lower Ganges and Brinkworthy Roads, the property offers potential for both agriculture and housing.

Designated as Agricultural Land Reserve, the property at 131 Brinkworthy Road has parameters on what can be developed currently, while not precluding options for affordable housing. The property has been used in a very limited way for both housing and agriculture in the past.

“We recognize the potential to increase both the housing and agricultural use of the property to the benefit of the community”, said Rob Grant, Executive Director. “There are exciting possibilities in combining affordable housing and food production.”

Community Services has a strong history in housing development with projects such as Murakami Gardens and Salt Spring Commons, and with food growing and distribution through the development of Harvest Farm and Food Programs.

We have begun a planning process including community consultation and exploring Agricultural Land Reserve options to ensure the vision is achievable and addresses key community needs.

“This was an opportunity to acquire a perfectly located parcel of land with great potential,” said Grant. “The intention is not to do anything quickly but to take our time in consultation, planning and evaluation of all of the current options and priorities.”
