Shelter Support Worker – Casual

Island Community Services is looking for a compassionate team member to work shift work at an Emergency Shelter supporting adults dealing with homelessness and other barriers.

The successful applicant has to have a level of maturity and ability to self-regulate in the face of some intense personalities and situations. Self-awareness is a must in this line of work.

Since we provide service 24/7, we need dedicated people with flexible schedules. This is a casual position with no set hours to start with. Most of our employees start on a casual basis, gaining skills and experience while working towards regular full-time and part-time positions with benefits.

Starting wage is $25.05 or $25.91 depending on experience, with an additional 10.2% in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays for casual workers.  Criminal Records Search for the Vulnerable Sector needed at hire. 

The Shelter Support Worker is part of the team running the Shelter. Responsibilities include ensuring safety and compliance with shelter rules, assisting with conflict resolution, providing meals and access to showers and laundry, monitoring the behaviour and needs of shelter users, ensuring fire safety and enforcing rule violations. The worker maintains a welcoming environment by engaging in positive and supportive interactions with shelter users. Duties include meal service and clean up, housekeeping such as cleaning the kitchen, mopping, bathrooms, laundry and other general cleaning.

Qualifications, Education & Experience:

A certificate in human services with a minimum of two years of support experience with adults experiencing homelessness, mental health and addictions issues or equivalent education and experience is preferred.
