Early Years Network – We Need Your Vote

Early Years NetworkThe proposal for the Southern Gulf Islands Early Years Network has been submitted to the Island Savings Community Grant Program. Between May 29 and June 23rd there is public voting on eligible grant applications. The 10 organizations that receive the most votes will be reviewed by a selection committee.  On June 29th the winning organization will be announced.

We need to rally friends, family and greater community and encourage to vote for the Southern Gulf Islands Early Years Network initiative to win $50 000 that will establish the Network and provide funding for the first year of operation.

That’s $50 000 for a Southern Gulf Islands Early Years Network that will connect existing early childhood services into a cohesive network that enhances the effectiveness and accessibility of these services in all communities.  Based on the model of an “Early Years Centre”, but adapted to the rural island context, numerous local sites will provide welcoming and effective access points to core supports and resources for families, child care providers and other service providers in every community.  Core services will include: peri-natal services, kindergarten transition, health education, food security and child care access.

The Network will be linked together virtually through a website and information-sharing system through common program planning and training initiatives, and through ongoing guidance and coordination from the Coordinator / Navigator.

The network will serve the Southern Gulf Islands which includes the communities of Salt Spring, Pender, Galiano, Mayne and Saturna Islands.  The network will provide an “Any door is the right door” program, meaning each site will be well-informed of the collective range of services and how to access them.  Services and resources will be available and/or accessible regardless of community or site.

There are approximately 650 children under the age of six living in the Southern Gulf Islands.
